Biohacking Part 1: Skin enhancement Tech

SKINCARE BEYOND CREAMS

Anyone who has spent any time online lately knows what it’s like to be inundated with biohacking content from dietitians and doctors to podcast bros. In today’s oversaturated media landscape, it can be hard to tell what’s legit and what’s engagement bait. In the next two editions of The Narcyssist, we’re cutting through the noise to focus on science-backed nutrition, tech, and home remedies that actually work.

Cleansers, moisturizers, and serums have the best proven track record for long term skin health, we're going to start out this two part series looking in to some beauty tech and home remedies so read on.

MASK OFF ON RED LIGHT THERAPY

Red Light Therapy has gotten a lot of traction in the general biohacking space lately, but it has a longstanding clinical use in skincare. Using low-wavelength red light penetrates the skin on a deep level, and jumpstarts cell renewal

Unlike the UVA and UVB rays in sunlight that damage your skin cells' DNA and speed up ageing, low wavelength red light doesn't burn or harm your skin. It does the opposite by boosting how your cells produce energy (ATP for advanced learners) which means faster healing, reduced redness, fewer breakouts, and overall healthier looking skin.

Red light therapy also increases collagen production, an important building block protein that hold your skin (and many other tissues) together. As we age our skin cells get worse at producing this vital protein which is what leads to wrinkles, sagging, fine lines etc. So this is a wonderful preventative measure with lots of scientific support.

However, not all devices are created equal. You may have seen the scary looking red light masks online, but most of them don't produce enough power to reach the energy threshold to get the benefits you need. Instead you should generally opt for a panel, as it covers more of your face and can also be used for other parts of your body (it's great for muscle soreness). Panels also tend to be less expensive than the mask counterparts. We're fond of this one from the brand FlowLife (FYI they have frequent sales)

WTF IS MICRO CURRENT

If you have ever fractured a bone you're likely familiar with electrotherapy for muscle retention, and a similar technology has found its way to skincare. Micro current devices use low voltage to stimulate the muscles under your skin to improve your skin.

Think of it like a strength training for your face, the tiny currents improve skin firmness, circulation, some collagen production and depuffing. It's a subtle and natural way to enhance your jawline, cheekbones, and skin texture without the need for needles or downtime.

But there is a catch: you have to be really religious about it. For best results daily use is necessary, but if you can't get yourself to use it 5 times a week this treatment may not be for you. It's definitely not for everyone. We've been using this one from TheraBody. It also has a red light function (among others) ideal for when you're on the go, but nowhere nearly as powerful as a panel.

SCANDINAVIA'S SECRET: SAUNA

Regular sauna sessions offers all kinds of health benefits and it's become all the rage in biohacking circles lately. They help you unwind and recover, but they also have incredible skin benefits.

Deliberate heat exposure increases blood flow which means more nutrient delivery to your skin. Sweating also helps you flush out unwanted toxins and impurities , all of which over time lead to clearer, smoother, and healthier looking skin.

To optimize your skin for the sauna, always cleanse your face before entering to remove excess sunscreen, dirt, and oil to prevent trapping debris in your pores. Some people like to cleanse after as well, but usually a rinse with cold water or a toner is enough

The interesting thing about sauna is that your skin is extra receptive during or right after a session. It can be a good idea to apply a clay mask while in the sauna to increase it's efficacy, or if you prefer you can follow the Scandinavian custom of applying honey to your skin in the sauna (it has anti-bacterial and calming properties, it exfoliates gently, and provides hydration). Once done in the sauna you have an excellent opportunity to apply serums like ACID HOUSE and rich moisturizer like SUEDE L'ECLAT for maximum effect. You'll have a glow like never before!
