Summertime Sweatness

SWEAT EFFECT

As the summer heat is picking up around the world, we thought it would be a good time to revisit all things sweat.

Sweating is a natural and necessary process, but it's not always pleasant to the people around us... So here is our quick guide to avoiding body odor this summer.

START OUT CLEAN

Sweat itself is odorless when it comes out of the pores, it's not until it reacts with bacteria already on your skin that the bad smells occurs. Here's how to prevent it.

You always want to start with clean and dry pits before applying deodorant, so wash away any bacteria and old sweat with a good bodywash. If you really struggle with BO, considering picking up a benzoyl peroxide wash from your nearest pharmacy and use it on your pits, privates, and feet.

Another great trick is applying some glycolic acid to your pits after cleansing. We usually recommend it for it's exfoliating properties, but its anti-bacterial properties makes it great at preventing body odor as well.

Some other good options for managing sweat: a quick spritz of hypochlorous acid on your face and pits after a workout if you don't have time to shower right away. For excessive sweating in your face or anywhere outside your pits, consider applying some anti-perspirant body cream to the area at night.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DEODORANT

Luxury deodorants from designer brands never worked for us and we'd sweat through them in hours. Our only option were drug story anti-perspirants, but those never smelled good. So we created No.1 and No.2

Unlike your standard gel deodorant that just mask bad smells, anti-perspirants both prevent you from sweating and kill the odor causing bacteria (thank you aluminium... more on that below)

To get the most out of the anti-sweat properties, apply your anti-perspirants at night before bed. The active ingredients take a few hours to absorb and seal the sweat glands, and daytime sweating can actually prevent this process. You can always reapply in the morning to get the extra scent boost that Narcyss No.1 and No.2 packs.

BREAKING OUR SILENCE ON THE ALUMINIUM SLANDER

We've said it before and we'll say it again: if the temperature outside is unnatural your deodorant should be as well. Natural ingredients have a time and place, but natural doesn't always mean "better"...

The term "natural" is a marketing term used to create sense of trust in.  But many “natural” ingredients (like essential oils) can irritate if applied directly to the skin. Technically arsenic and plutonium are “natural.”

Likewise there's been a lot of fear mongering around aluminium (wait I thought aluminium was  natural? hmm... ) causing breast cancer and a whole cottage industry of "aluminium free" deodorants has sprung up as a result. Major oncological research societies across the world has found no evidence supporting these claims.

What there is evidence for, however, is that aluminium salts do work in preventing sweating and body odour. Don't fall for the hype around "natural" or alarmists outrage, and choose a product that works. Unless you want to walk around with moist pits all summer...
